Malawi to Showcase Community Project
17 November 2008

Malawi’s first game reserve to be run in conjunction with the local community will open next year, coinciding with the 150th anniversary of Dr David Livingstone’s discovery of Lake Nyasa.

The Majete Community Camp is one of two new camps to open as part of the Majete Wildlife Reserve.

Aimed at the middle-market travellers, the camp is self-catering. Offering accommodation in tents with communal toilet and washing areas, it is to be run by local communities.

The second camp on the reserve is the upmarket Thawale Camp, comprising fully-catered accommodation in comfortable bush tents with en-suite bathrooms.

Under the guidance and sponsorship of African Parks, herds of elephant, hippos and rhino, antelope and other game, have been relocated to the park, which had lost most of its wildlife to poachers.

In the next four years, more animals will be relocated, including 100 more elephant as well as lions and cheetahs.

The camp is within a stone's throw of the spot where Livingstone's party met near disaster as their boat failed to negotiate the swift flowing River Shire.
